Mangonui Retain DargaviHe Shield

[■Special to “Northern Advocate”} KAITAIA, This Day.

Mangonui retained the Dargaville Shield by defeating Northern Wairoa by an innings and 17 runs. Northern Wairoa batted first on Saturday and found difficulty in scoring off the accurate Mangonui bowling. With 3 wickets down for 41 their prospects did not look very bright. Wilfred Thompson, the slow bowler, then took charge and none of the batsmen showed ability to play his leg spinners.

His average read 7 wickets for 27 and Wairoa were all out for the small total of til.

Those who reached double figures were Dabb 20, McMahon 12 and Ohlsen 12.

Mangonui Start Well

Shortly before afternoon tea, F Panther and N. Rogers opened the Mangonui innings and runs came very slowly. After the adjournment, however, runs came much' faster, and the opening partnership yielded 85 and the score at stumps was 96 for 3 wickets. Continued on Monday morning, the innings realised 156, of which F. Panther contributed 34. N. Rogers 48, A. Fanthcr 13 and W. Thompson 23. Rush and Lindberg were the most successful Wairoa bowlers, with three wickets each.

Wairoa Fail Again

In their second venture, Wairoa did not fare much better and were dismissed for 78.

Those who reached double figures were Dabb 11, Ohlsen 19, Sundberg 14 and Rush 17. The wickets were divided between five bowlers.
