Bridegroom’s Wedding Day Has Sequel in Court
IPer Press Association. Copyright. 3 CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.
Returning from Kaiapoi on the day of his wedding, Charles John Napier had three mishaps while driving back to Christchurch, and, after striking a tram, continued on home.
He was later traced by the police, and he appeared in the court yesterday.
Counsel pointed l out that cancellation of Napier’s license would virtually separate him from his wife, to whom he had to drive home from Springburn at week-ends. Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., said he would not take Napier’s license, but would fine him £5 on the charge of negligent driving and endorsed his license. He was also fined 207- for failing to report an accident, and another charge of failing to stop after the accident was withdrawn.
Tire police stated that on the morning of the offence the defendant was married, and later in the day hired a car and drove his wife and two other women to Kaiapoi. While there he had some liquor, and while driving back to Christchurch he collided with a cyclist. In the vicinity of Linwood Avenue he apparently lost control of the car, and struck a garden plot in the centre of the street. He then collided with .a tram, and failed to stop.
An Independent Cable Service message states that the British racing motorist, Mr John Cobb, will leave for America tomorrow to attempt the world land speed record in Utah, in August. He hopes to reach 400 miles an hour.
