Alleged Drunken Orgy At “Hard-Up” Ball
[Special to “Northern Advocate'] AUCKLAND. Saturday.
The "Hard-Up Ball” held in the Auckland Town Hall last week by the Commercial Travellers' Association, who organised the event in aid of the Mayor’s Centennial Fund, is the subject o£ a strong resolution carried l by the combined temperance societies of Auckland.
A resolution was adopted by the societies as follows: “This meeting of members of the New Zealand Alliance and -Temperance Societies in Auckland strongly protest against the alleged disgraceful drunken orgy which took place in the Auckland Town Hall on the occasion of the •Hard-Up Ball.’ “It is reported that, contrary to the law and to conditions governing the letting of the hall, liquor bars were installed, and large quantities of liquor were scid; also that numbers of those present became absolutely drunk, that disgusting scenes took place, and that the hall was left in a filthy condition.
“It therefore urges that those responsible be prosecuted and that instructions be given that the use of the hall be refused for any similar gatherings in the future.”
