Power Chief Destroyed After Riccarton Fall

Power Chief, who was one of the ruling favourites for the Grand National Steeplechase, fractured his pelvis and had to be destroyed when he fell in the Homeby Steeples at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting at Riccarton on Saturday.

This was particularly bad luck for his North Island owner, Mr F. Armstrong, as Power Chief had been runner-up in the Great Northern Steeplechase and Wellington Steeplechase, and looked as though he would be difficult to beat in the big Riccarton race next week.

Power Chief was a six-year-old gelding, by Tractor from Asterism. and was trained by Mrs A. W, McDonald, at Awapuni. RACING FIXTURES: August 8, 10, 12; Canterbury J.C. August 19: Pakuranga Hunt Club.
