Yorkshire Beaten in County Game

The most remarkable victory of this season’s county cricket was registered at Stourbridge today, when the Worcester XI, which occupied 11th position ast year, beat the champion side, Yorkshire.
in a low-scoring match, the fast bowling of R. T. D. Perks was mainly responsible in dismissing Yorkshire for *9l and 113, This was a great effort by Worcester, as the 1938 champions were reinforced by their three test players (L. Hutton, A. Wood and W. E. Bowes).
The outstanding individual batsman in the series, which began on Wednesday, was D. C. S. Compton, who Carried his bat for 214 against Derby, at Lords. Other capital bowling doubles went to the credit of T. W. Goddard (Gloucester), A. W. Wellard (Somerset) and H. Verity (Yorkshire). Middlesex and Gloucester, who followed Yorkshire at the end of last year’s county table, both won outright. Results and principal performances:— DERBY V. MIDDLESEX. Derby; First innings, 110 (Sims 8 for 32); second innings, 313 (D. Smith 96, Worthington 79 not out). Middlesex: First innings, 7 for 447, declared (Compton 214 not out). Middlesex won by an innings and 24 runs. LEICESTER V. GLAMORGAN. Leicester: First innings, 216 (Berry 76; Mercer 7 for 67). Glamorgan; First innings, 120 for 2. Rain caused the abandonment of the match.
GLOUCESTER V. HAMPSHIRE.
Gloucester: First innings, 212 (Creese 5 for 50); second innings, 7 for 160, declared. Hampshire: First innings, 167 (Goddard 7 for 77): second innings, 162 (Goddard 5 for 65). Gloucester won by 43 runs.
NORTHANTS V. LANCASHIRE.
Northants: First innings, 368 (Timms 83, Nelson 76 not out); Phillipson 5 for 63). Lancashire: First innings, 9 for 198 (Partridge 7 for 49). The game also was abandoned owing to rain.
ESSEX V. SOMERSET.
Essex; First innings, 72 (Wellard 5 for 35); Andrews 4 for 34); second innings, 174 (Wellard 7 for 68). Somerset: First innings, 51 (Stephenson 5 for 4); second innings, 72 (Taylor 5 for 23, Nichols 4 for 33). Essex won by 123 runs.
SUSSEX V. WARWICK.
Sussex: First innings, 238 (Mayer 6 for 50); second innings, 162 (Hollies 5 for 50; Wyatt 5 for 58). Warwick: First innings, 8 for 316, declared (Sale 101, Dollery 90); second, 85 for 2. Warwick won by 8 wickets.
WORCESTER V. YORKSHIRE,
Worcester: First innings, 102 (Verity 4 for 33); second innings, 118 (Verity 4 for 40). Yorkshire: First innings, 91 (Perks 4 for 20); second innings 113 (Perks 5 for 50, Martin 4 for 30). Worcester won by 16 runs.
