Malnutrition Causes Stock Mortality

So unfavourable has been, the weather for stock in Northland this year that some dairy farmers in the Whangarei district have been losing a small number of animals during the past few weeks.

From a dairying point of view, the past season has been the most unfavourable for many years.

The dry late summer and autumn months gave little opportunity for growth of pasture, and now with the colder weather, stock is feeling the effects of the feed shorage. Many farmers have found themselves short of hay, and with resources of rough feed almost entirely eaten out, are in a serious position. In some cases, stock have become weakened and, lying down, have been unable to rise, and have died. The loss, however, cannot be classed as

heavy. Nevertheless the outlook is by no means promising unless an early improvement in the weather takes place.
