N.S.W. “Faked Budget” Ventilated By M.Ps.
(Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 26.
During the debate on the Labour noconfidence motion in the Legislative Assembly today, the former Minister of Labour, Mr E. S. Spooner, dealt with his differences in the Cabinet over the Government’s public works policy. Mr Spooner declared he had no recollection of telling Mr E. M. Rooson, a Parliamentary colleague, that the Budget had been faked. However, he admitted telling Mr Robson he was very dissatisfied with the financial position.
Mr Robson, in the course of his speech later, said he wanted it plainly understood that Mr Spooner had told him the budget had been faked. Referring to his conversation with Mr Robson, Mr Spooner said that he could not recall the words used, but if the word “faked” had slipped out it did not have the sinister meaning sometimes attached to it. Mr B. S. Stevens, Premier, said that after hearing the speeches of Mr Spooner and Mr Robson he had decided that Mr Spooner did use the word “fake” regarding the Budget, though Mr Spooner, in an interview with him and the Attorney-General, had denied using it to Mr Robson. The debate is unfinished.
