Virtual State Of War In Manchukuo
TOKIO, July 26.
In view of the continued trouble with Soviet forces on the Manchukuo border, the Japanese Government announced today the immediate enforcement throughout the empire of the air defence provisions of the National Defence Law. The enforcement of air defence means that ,a virtual state of war has been proclaimed in Mnchukuo, which is most concerned at the continued clashes with Soviet-Mongol troops.
The Premier of Manchukuo has further decreed that troops will replace police and restrictions will be placed upon meetings, British publications, and land and water communications.
It is claimed in Tokio that, with the loss of four aeroplanes, the Japanese shot down 44 Soviet-Mongol machines near the border of Outer Mongolia and Manchukuo on Sunday. A communique issued by the 26th Army from Kw.antung claims that 59 Soviet planes were brought down on the Manchukuo border yesterday. Japanese artillery heavily bombarded Soviet positions on the west bank of the Khalha River.
