Disastrous Heat Wave And Drought In U.S.
(Received 11.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 26.
Nine States, including New England, New York. New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with a quarter of the nation's population, and probably the largest proportion of mixed farming areas, are undergoing a heat wave and three months’ drought, exceeding the records for 60 years. Irreparable damage has been done to crops, and the milk supply has dropped seriously due to the lack of pasture.
Water supplies in many communities are exhausted, and forest fires are raging over wide areas. New York alone reporting over 40. Only heavy rain almost immediately can save the area from almost total crop losses. Heat-ridden cities have been the scene of acute suffering, with considerable loss of life, particularly through drowning at the beaches, which are crowded by millions’seeking relief. Ontario is similarly affected by heat and drought. Five children have been drowned in the province.
