Mr Cordell Hull. Secretary of State to the United States, who has refused to give details of his Government's decision to abrogate the 1911 Treaty of Friendship and Commerce with Japan. Born in Tennessee in 1871, Mr Hull was educated at the National Normal University, Lebanon, Ohio, and the Cumberland University Law School, being admitted to the Bar of Tennessee in 1891. During the Spanish-American War he served in Cuba as a captain, Mr Hull commenced his political career in 1893 when he entered the Tennessee House of Representatives, becoming a member of the United States House of Representatives in 1907, where he served until 1921, and later from 1923 to 1931. Hi that year he was elected U.S. Senator for Tennessee, which position he resigned in 1937 on his appointment as Secretary of State. Mr Hull’s name is coupled with much far-reaching financial legislation, and has been U.S. delegate to several important international conferences.
