(■Received 12.30 p.m.J RUGBY. July 26. Questions were asked in the House of Commons yesterday about the appointment of someone outside the civil service to be Permanent Under-Secre-tary to the Colonial Office, .and whether the Prime Minister./Mr Chamberlain, was satisfied that no serving civil servant in Britain, was capable of discharging the duties in question. Mr Chamberlain replied: “I am satisfied that, having regard to the exceptional pressure on other departments' 1 , no equally suitable civil servant could have been made available.” The Prime Minister added that all considerations relevant to Lie public inlerest were borne in mind when making the appointment.
