Prison For Fraud Under Auctioneers Act

Sentence of six months’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr Justice Blair on John Richards, aged 55, managingdirector of the Dominion Auctioneering Company, who was found guilt on six charges of fraudulent accounting under the Auctioneers Act, and or.-e charge of theft of 2/3. All the charges related to transactions in fruit. Arthur Haines, aged 35, found guilty on similar charges, was admitter to three years’ probation and was ordered to pay £3B toward the costs of the prosecution. His Honor said that auctioneers were very important people in the community, because they were entrusted with the realisation of produce which was the work of other people. So much' of New Zealand’s income depended upon the produce of the land that any prejudicing of due realisation touched the income of a great many people.
