Profit For Government In Japanese Onions
(Special to “Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND, Thursday.
It is believed that the Government will make a handsome profit on the shipment of Japanese onions, which arrived by the Naniwa Maru on Saturday. Prices to storekeepers have been fixed at 22/- a crate of 1 cwt„ or £22 a ton. The general opinion in Auckland is that the shipment of 725 tons was landed by the Internal Marketing Department at from £B/10/- to £l2 a ton, including duty and all freight charges. If all are sold the Government will show a gain of about £7OOO. New Zealand onions are still being shipped to "Australia in the execution of contracts made several months ago. A shipment of 700 bags arrived at Sydney earlier this week, and they are expected to sell for more than £3O a ton. Heavy exports have been leaving New Zealand since early this year.
