Hikurangi Calves Consigned To London

One of the few co-operative bobby calf pools operated by a dairy company to sell veal on consignment to the London market last year was Hikurangi. Realisations were most disappointing, it was reported 'at the annual meeting. Skins and veils were marketed in New Zealand, but veal and sundries, owing to the lack of competition from meat exporters in New Zealand, were consigned' by the pool to England. The good price obtained on the open market in London was more than offset by the heavy charges which had to bo met for cool storage, etc.

Calves collected in September and October, representing 55 per cent of the whole, were sold on open tenderlive weight at the works. The realisation for these, averaging 7/5, was regarded as quite satisfactory.
