WOMENS INSTITUTES

i Ngunguru 1 Mrs C. K. Snell presided over the recent April meeting of the Ngunguru j Institute, 1G members being present. The competition for a thrift article was won by Miss Nichol. Two written competitions were won i j by Mrs Arms.rong and Miss Nichol. Hostesses for the afternoon were Miss Grogan and Miss Armstrong. i I Waikiekie-Waiotira I i i The April meeting of the Waikiekie- j Waiotira Women's Institute was held i in the Waikiekie Hall recently. There was a large attendance, and two new j membeis were welcomed. The roll-call, "My most inleresiji.g j outing." vas exceptionally well an- | swered. and brought forth some very j interesting points. Mrs E. Hilford j e:«ve a report on the council meeting j l.ek 1 at Whangarei. i T\\f competitions were held ino j vvoiv keenly contested, theve ) y c 1g j retofi entries in both. Result were: i Bottle peaches, Mrs H. Yearbury .', Mvj D. Jackson 2; embroidered d'oyley, Mrs R. Exley 1, Mrs D. M. Walker 2. A demonstration of crochet by Mrs R. Exley and Mrs A. Gailey proved most j j'l cresting. Games and competitions held during the afternoon were greatly enjoyed • Hostesses for luncheon were Mrs D. M. Wt:ker and Mrs F. Berridge, and \he sirgng of the National Anthom brought a most enjoyable and successful day to a close. Umawera Mrs Beale, president' of the Umawera Institute, presided over a good attendance at the April meeting. New members were welcomed. The roll-call was a humorous joke. The competition for arts and crafts ..resulted in Mrs Oliver being placed first, Miss A. Harrison second, and Mrs Postie weight third. Teams were chosen for a debate at the next meeting. An entertainment committee was elected, consisting of four members. Hostesses for the day were Mesdames Smith, Grayson and Baker. Paponga The Paponga Institute held its annual meeting in the Settlers' Hall on March 14 There were 11 members and one visitor present. The meeting opened with "Comrades and Friends," followed by all repeating the aspirations. Mrs J. Dyer was chosen this year for president. Mrs W. Dyer thanked all those who had helped her during her term of office. She gave the thought for the month, "Don't nurse opportunity too Ici.g; take it into active partnership at once lest it leave you for other company." The roll-call was an original limerick.. For the points competition, a frock made and worn, costing not more than 7/o, was won by Mrs Yarborough, with Mrs W. Dyer second. Mrs J. Dyer provided a very amusing competition, which was won by Mrs W. Dyer. A sales table was held in aid of seating accommodation for the hall. A very enjoyable afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs J. Dyer; vice-presi-dents, Mrs W. Dyer and Mrs Yarborough; secretary, Miss I. Dyer; treasurer, Miss F. Grounds; committee, Mrs King, Mrs Maxwell, Miss M. Grounds, Miss F. Grounds. Tutekehua Omahuta The Tutekehua-Omahuta Institute held its monthly meeting in the Institute Hall at the Mangamuka Bridge on Friday, April 14. There was a fair number present, Mrs Auton (president) being in the chair. After the business of the meeting was concluded, a competition was held fo rthe best jar of plum jam; Mrs Auton winning the first prize. The roll-call, "My favourite author," brought forth a varied choice. Afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, Mesdames Auton and J.j E. Tulloch. Motuti The Motuti Maori Institute held its monthly meeting in the woodwork room of the Motuti Native School on Tuesday, April 18. Mrs J. Howard presided. After singing the Institute song, Miss Kane, Dominion president, was introduced to the ladies. There were representatives from the Te Hua Hua and Rangi Point Maori Institutes. Miss Kane spoke of the work of different Institutes throughout New Zealand. Her address was very much appreciated. Several items were rendered by members, thanks being expressed by Mrs J. Howard, Motuti. Miss T. Boyce, Rangi Point, and Miss Harris. ! Te Hua Hua. Miss Kane was presented with a l beautiful bouquet and two articles j made from products of the bush, while ! Mrs J. Dyer was presented with a bouquet and a lacebark piu-piu. Mrs '! Fricker expressed thanks of all ladies ' for the kindly interest taken in the i work of the Maori Institutes. Afternoon tea served by members ' of Motuti Women's Institute was much j' appreciated.
