Sir Andrew Russell Visits Kaikohe

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] KAIKOHE, This Day.

There was an enthusiastic gathering of returned soldiers and the public in the Regent Theatre, Kaikohe, on Thursday afternoon, when General Sir Andrew r Russell, who commanded the New Zealand Forces overseas during the Great War, spoke on the problem of defence. He was (accompanied by Colonel Barrowclough, chairman of the Auckland district' of the Defence League, who also spoke on the principles of the Defence League. Mr C. Cameron was in the chair. Sir Andrew gave a comprehensive review of the events leading up to the present crisis, and stressed the opinion that the people of New Zealand would have to do their share in the defence of their own homes and the Empire. He congratulated the local branch of the Defence League on the good progress it w r as making, and pointed out that there was a big job ahead. At the close of the meeting, the chairman moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speakers, which was unanimously carried, and Sir Andrew and Colonel Barrowclough were entertained at afternoon tea in the Tudor Tea Rooms.
