CANBERRA, October 26.
The Duke of Kent’s appointment as Governor-General was officially announced today by the Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, who said the presence in Australia of the Duke and Duchess would serve as an additional bond, if such were needed, between the people of the Commonwealth and Britain.
Mr Lyons added that it was a great privilege to make the announcement. “This mark of His Majesty’s interest in the Commonwealth is extremely gratifying,” said the Prime Minister. “We welcome the opportunity of making their Royal Highnesses familiar with our country and our ways, and will do our utmost to make their sojourn a period of great happiness and interest.”
Mr Lyons paid tribute to the splendid service by Lord Gowrie, who had asked that he might retire as from November, 1939, upon which the Duke of Kent will assume office.
The news of the Duke of Kent’s appointment has created great surprise and jubiliation in all parts of the Commonwealth. Children May Come Also. According to a cable from London, the Duke of Kent’s entourage informed the Australian Associated Press that, though no decision had been reached regarding the children going to Australia, it is most likely that they will go. The matter of the appointment was only proposed a fortnight ago. Labour’s Welcome. Mr C. Curtin, Labour leader in the Federal Parliament, said; “I ,am sure that the warm-hearted people of Australia will give a cordial welcome to His Royal Highness and the Duchess of Kent. I hope their tenure of office will be happy .and successful.”
Lord Gowrie said the King had paid a great compliment to the people of Australia. He felt that the Duke of Kent’s appointment would be received with tremendous joy and satisfaction throughout Australia. It was a practical demonstration ox His Majesty’s interest in the people.
