Plane For Far Northern Stock Sale
Perhaps for the first time an aeroplane is to be used in connection with a Northland stock sale.
At Hukatere on Saturday, between 300 and 900 head, mainly of beef cattle, from the To Paid station, will be put up for auction. The yards at Hukatere, situated midway on the Ninety Mile Beach, and in a lonely vicinity, are the most northerly In New Zealand. Weather permitting, a plane will leave Auckland at 9 a.m. on Saturday, arriving at Wafpapakauri aerodrome about 10.15 a.m. Aboard the machine will be an auctioneer from one of the two firms who will conduct the sale, and also buyers. The passengers will leave the plane at Waipapakauri and proceed about 20 miles by road to Hukatere, completing the whole trip from Auckland in about two hours, whereas the Whangaref staff of the same company will be faced with a five-hour motor journey to arrive at the same destination. Although so isolated, Hukatere itself saw several aeroplane landings there during “Wizard” Smith’s attempt on the world’s land speed record. The saleyards are adjacent to where Smith’s racing machine was housed during his long sojourn at the beach.
