From the powerful pen of Baroness Orczy comes the story of “The Emperor's Candlesticks.” the thrilling now William Powoll-Luiso Rainer film which opened at the Plaza Theatre last night. The film affords amazing contrast with the former vehicles of these two players. The star who has become famous as “The Thin Man” new is a dashing secret agent in Europe and Miss Rainer, recently hailed for her superb artistry as the Chinese slavebride in The Good Earth," is an exotic woman of international intrigue. The story moves from Vienna to Warsaw, into Russia and back into Paris and London, with suspenseful action at every step. The spies suspect each otiier and rightfully. Death is close on their heels many limes but they outwit it and eventually romance brings them- together. The supporting cast includes Robert Young, Maureen O'Sullivan and Frank Morgan.
Tire programme, which also includes an “Our Gang” comedy, a Robert Benchley oddity. “How to Start the Day,” and a coloured travelogue, “Glimpses of Peru." will be shown again, tonight.
Norman von Nida. the Australian professional golfer, will compete in the New Zealand golf championships at Balmacewan links, Otago, commencing on October 10. It is likely that Harry Williams, the 1937 Australian amateur champion, will accompany him. The State Housing Department is inviting tenders for the erection of a further 10 houses at Dargaville, on sections which have been acquired in Plunket and Tirarau Streets. The first contract of 13 houses is nearing completion
