Awatea In “A Whole Gale”

(Received 1.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. This Day

The Awatea, from Auckland. arrived here at 5.5 p.m. yesterday, followed by the Wanganella, from Wellington, at 5.10 p.m., and the Mariposa, from Auckland, at 5.15 p.m., all times being taken at Sydney Heads. The three liners, when sighted through a haze, were almost in line, but the Awatea drew ahead and won an exciting race, to be first to enter the harbour.

The Wanganella was second, but the Mariposa gained on her fast at the finish.

Captain Davey said the Awatea encountered a “whole gale” on Saturday and Sunday. The vessel was unable to make more than nine knots at one period.
