Prime Minister’s Explanation Accepted

Reference to the controversy aroused by the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, recently, when he declared that certain figures concerning the Post Office Savings Bank quoted by the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, had been only a half-truth, was made by Mr Hamilton in his Town Hall address on Saturday night. “I consider it was gentlemanly of the Prime Minister to state what ho did in this connection,” said Mr Hamilton. “I accept his remarks unconditionally, and the matter ends there. “What I do object to, however, is the giving of only half-truths. The Hon. F. Jones now gives further statements to try to confuse the issue. We want the question dealt with that we asked for, without any side-stepping. Mr Jones has quoted a whole lot of figures quite irrelevant to the question at stake.

“During three years of the previous Government’s term, withdrawals from the Post Office Savings Bank exceeded deposits by over £ 12.000.000. figures to prove which I can produce. This money went out of the post office during the depression. I used these figures to prove the difficulties which the people wore forced to undergo during the depression,” concluded Mi Hamilton.
