The increasing cost of the operation of the New Zealand under the control of the Labour Government was mentioned by the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, when spoakmg to a Whangarei audience in the Town Hall on Saturday night. “Labour lock the control of the railways from the Railways Board ano handed it over to 'a Minister." said Mr. Hamilton.
"In the first four-weekly period of this year, revenue was down by £lfj, CCO as compared with the corresponding period cf last year, while.operations expenses had gone up by £2O. 000. which meant an additional £35,000 with which (hr- country had bean burdened. For every £ ICO earned in revenue in 193 G, £B9 was spent in operation expenses. Tn 1937 the percentage was increased lo £9l 10 ■, while in 1935, of every £IOO earned, £9(l is being paid cut iti expenses, 'and the taxpayer is having to foot the bill from time to time. “Every? extra £135 earned in revenue has cost £177 to get it. Extra business usually means extra profit, and no businessman would conduct his affairs in the manner the railways of this country arc being handled.
“With the railways that are being built today, it is not difficult to forecast that the taxpayer will be burdened with a very heavy load in the future."
