The Club Broadcast
An ,Unfortunate Hitch MR GILLIES EXPLAINS. Schools in all parts of the Dominion .listened in last Tuesday afternoon to the broadcast on club matters, prepared by Mr. J. H. Denhehy and Kupe. Disappointment was generally felt throughout the North that Mr Dennehy could not make the broadcast in person; but Mr C. L. Gillies was voted a very good substitute. That Mr Gillies has the interest of Clubs at heart, is well indicated by the pains he took to ensure the best possible results. He, too, was sorry Mr Dennehy could not present his chat in person, but used every means in his power to convey the enthusiasm that is so essential a part of Mr J. H. Dennehy, Agricultural Instructor to North Auckland schools, when dealing with club affairs. Mr Gillies deserves the warmest congratulations for a difficult task well done. In explaining an unfortunate hitch in the broadcasting arrangements, Mr Gillies said he got the “Stand By” signal,- followed shortly by the “Go ahead but pot. until the broadcast had been completed did he learn that the line had not been connected until the address was well in progress. This explains why Mr Dennehy was not credited with the broadcast, and, in the elimination of Mr Gillies’ introduction to the talk being robbed of some essential “atmosphere.” This is how Mr Gillies commenced the broadcast: — “Hello, Boys and Girls, “I guess this is going to be the biggest Club meeting of boys and girls that has ever been held in New Zealand. We have some members listen-ing-in from the Far North, others scattered throughout the Auckland Province, Taranaki, Wellington, and Hawke’s Bay. Even in far away Southland we know there are boys and girls who will be listening-in today. Greetings to you all then. “And now for our meeting. “Mr Dennehy, Agricultural Instructor for North Auckland, and a keen club supporter, is going to have a chat to us about clubs, especially calf clubs. However he can’t be here personally to talk to you, so I am going to pass on to you some of the things Mr Dennehy has to say. Now then, you’ll just have to imagine that I’m Mr Dennehy speaking ” And then followed the address that most of you listened to with such interest.
