'Cowie’s Fine Bowling Performance Against Notts; N.Z. Going Well

' OXDON, June 19. rpHE New Zealand cricketers commenced c match against Nottingham County XI today. The attendance was 5000. The players omitted from the New Zealand team were Vivian, Wallace, Lamason, Gallichan and Carson. The manful bowling <sf Cowie, well supported by that of Roberts and Dunning, enabled the New Zealanders to accomplish an outstanding performance by dismissing the hitherto unbeaten county team on an excellent wicket in under three hours. •Cowie, mustering good pace through the air and off the pitch, kept the batsmen constantly respectful. Displaying remarkable stamina, he bowled unchanged for nearly an hour in the morning and another hour in the afternoon. When given his sweater, he was applauded as though he had made a century.

Roberts’ Good Form. ! Roberts showed his best form since the match against Surrey. He regained his nip off the pitch and swung the ball slightly, which was responsible for catches being taken behind the wicket and in the slips. A chance was missed in the slips, while one snick flew over the slips’ heads. When the main bowlers required a rest, Dunning gave fine support. Good catches finished off the innings. Moloney’s slow deliveries again broke a partnership which proved likely to be troublesome.

The “Daily Mail,” while admitting that the team is a powerful striking force, contends that it is . a compromise between, conflicting claims of youth and form, and that it is desirable to field the strongest combination possible. .. Experiments Later. Doubtless the selectors feel that an experiment, in the encouragement of youth must be suspended until the first test is won, after which the problem of building to meet Australia may govern the policy. -

The bowlers were deserving of extra praise, as, after lunch, the ball was somewhat greasy, owing to rain, which caused an hour’s Interruption Of play in the morning. • ‘ _ Batting Satisfying Also. New Zealand’s batting was almost as satisfying as its bowling. Hadlee and Kerr batted confidently and scored 74 runs for the first wicket partnership in just over an hour. The former touched one into his stump after a sound innings, which included four fours and one:five. Kerr batted steadily for an hour and a half and hit four fours. Larwood bowled only one over, while Voce was played confidently, likewise Butler, who has' taken two ,“hat tricks” this season.
