Improvements To Northern Highways

A report presented to the council of the A.A. last week indicated that great improvements were being made to the main highways of Northland. Special attention is being paid to raising highways in flood areas. Some of the subsidiary roads which carry a large volume of traffic, however, were the subject of unfavourable comment. It was mentioned that a higher standard of maintenance was required to cater for the traffic between Waimate North and Paihia, It has been reported that, the approach to the Waitqngi bridge needed attention and an inspection revealed that the approaches required repairs as the road surface had subsided several inches. •

The. highway from t Ohaeawai to Tgheke is badly pot-holed in places. Representations have also b ( een made to A.A. officials that sumcient attention was not being paid to the Here-kino-Broadwood highway, the narrowness of which presented greater danger when the surface was neglected;
