Martial Law In Pennsylvania
(Received 10 a.m.) J . NEW YORK, June 19. A telegram from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, states that the Governor, Mr G. H. Earle, telegraphed to the president of the Bethlehem . Steel Corporation requesting the closing of its plant at Johnstown, as a means of preserving peace. - ’' . Mr Earle hinted that, in the event of a refusal, he would declare martial law because 40,000 members of the United Mine Workers’ Union planned to inarch, to Johnstown on Sunday as a demonstration of sympathy. Corporation Refuses. . The Bethlehem Corporation refused to close its plant, whereupon martial law' was declared. Five thousand additional State policemen were sent to Johns- - town, with orders to take over the , policing of the plant, suspend all operations and disarm the vigilantes. The leader of the Committee for In-. . dustrial Organisation, Mr John Lewis, subsequently announced the concellations of the miners’ march to Johnstown. ‘
Relief For Strikers,
The Federal Mediation Board has invited the leaders of the various steel companies and union officials to open peace negotiations at Cleveland on Tuesday. " ‘ • A telegram from Washington says the} Works Progress Administration announces that relief Will be provided for the 85,000 workers-rendered idle by steel strikes. There will be no differentiation between strikers and non-strikers. The situation is considered to be acute, and suffering is reported from many quarters.
