Race Fan Has To Pay Out
Racing to get to Kensington Park for the first race at the last Whangarei meeting, was the cause of Robert Preston White contributing a dividend of £3 and costs 19/- to the Transport Department at the Whangarei Police Court today. The Government traffic inspector stationed at Okaihau said that, en route to Whangarei, he saw defendant pass a line of traffic between Hikurangi and Kauri when travelling at a speed of between 50 and 55 miles per hour. The car had its full complement of passengers and White had admitted hurrying to get to Whangarei in time for the first race.
In a letter to the court, White said that there were no intersections on the stretch of road, and he had a clear view for half a mile ahead. There were places on the new formation where three cars could pass with safety.
The magistrate said such a high speed could not be justified.
