PRIMARY SCHOOLS RUGBY TOURNEY

Sponsored by the Whangarei Primary Schools • Rugby Union, a series of trial matches was played at Rugby Park today, as the -first step towards selecting hte team to play for the Cadr bury Fry and Hudson Shield.

Eleven teams took part, the districts represented being Mangakahia, Tangiteroria, Onerahi, Glenbervie,: Kamo, Hiknrahgi, Hukeremii, Ruatangata, Waiotira, with separate teams from the Convent and Whangarei High Schools.

Most of the schools in the district are too small to support fifteeh-a-side teams, and the boys, hitherto, have played in seven-a-side games. The purpose of today’s matches was to introduce the boys to the full-side game, and, considering the. lack of experience, the standard was surprisingly good: ' Midlands Present.

By special invitation, teams from the Midlands district took part. Midlands will play , Whangarei for the shield late in July, and today’s match was in the nature of a trial for both. Mr ken Hayr, the selector, was present, and it had been decided to stage further trials on July 3, during show week, when the Midlands teams will again be invited to take part. Added emphasis was given to the trials owing to prospects of the Northern Roller Mills provincial tourney being held in Whangarei. The venue of the tourney will be decided by the Auckland executive on June 28, and latest information is that the chances of Whangarei getting the tourney are good. Northern Union Planned. The northern team will be selected from Midlands, Whangarei, Bay of Islands and Northern Wairoa schools. The • Whangarei _ Primary Schools Rugby Union has called a meeting for July 2 of delegates from all primary schools unions in the North, for the purpose of forming a Northland Primary Schools Rugby Union. ■' At today’s matches, the teachers •coached the boys during play, and cocoa was served by Mr arid Mrs L. C. Garry.
