HIKURANGI TOURNEY HELD UP BY RAIN
Bowls
The first day’s play in the Hikurangi I Bowling Club’s annual full rink tourney, which commenced yesterday, was marred throughout by rain. A slight drizzle in the morning developing later into a steady downpour which continued throughout the whole day. The unfortunate weather conditions, however, in no way dampened the enthusiasm of some of the players, a dozen of whom rolled up at 9 a.m. The others gradually appeared and by 11 [o’clock there, were sufficient teams to | proceed with the tournament. The vice-president, Mr Jones, in welcoming the competitors said that, owing to the late start, the usual 21 heads would have to be reduced to 18. However, when' the players did manage to make a start, much time was lost cwing to their having to take shelter during the extra heavy showers, and as a result only one game was finished. There was ho play today. Results:— 1 Section A. First round: Williams (Portland) 20, beat Nesbitt (Hikurangi) 18; Cockerton (Maungaturoto) beat Barnard (Dargaville) by default; Roberts (Whangarei) 20, beat Stark (Hikurangi) 16; Steele (Hikurangi) 18, beat Ferguson (Portland) 10.
