SPRINTING TASKS AT ELLERSLIE
[Special To “Northern Advocate.”] AUCKLAND, This Day. Despite the rain that fell overnight and this morning, the going on the No. 1 grass track at Ellerslie was in fairly good order, though a trifle on the soft side and a number of horses were allotted sprinting tasks before breakfast. Mazir and Tybalt were sprinted half a mile and completed their task in’49s. Mazir was holding his companion at the finish, but it was a good effort on the part of both horses. Had the meeting been held, Mazir would not have fulfilled his engagements and his prospects of starting oh Monday dej pend entirely on the going, j Adeline and Very Glad reeled off three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Adeline went particularly well, and, as she looks much better than she did at Paeroa where she ran a really good race, her prospects in the Easter Handicap look bright, as she is not averse to soft going. Royal Appellant’s Useful Task. Royal Appellant was given a useful task, coming home over the last halfmile in 54 2-ssec. This horse also goes well when the going is easy and the conditions on Monday are not likely to 1 be to his disadvantage. 1
Tail Light and Wild Flower sprinted three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. Both put plenty of dash into their work, but Wild Flower was showing signs of lameness after her gallop. This has happened before and will probably wear off. Horowhenua and Versant were companions over seven furlongs, running the distance in 1.32 2-5. Neither of these horses has raced for some time, but Horowhenua claims an engagement on the second day at Ellerslie, and Versant will be seen out at Avofidale. Scotland Let Off With Sprint.
, Grand City hit out with plenty of freedom over half a mile, which occupied 51sec. This hack is engaged in the Eden Handicap. Scotland was let off with a sprint down the straight, but was not after time. His owner, W. J. | McLean, stated that he would start in j the Easter Handicap, in which he will j be ridden by B. H. Morris. Windsor Lad was schooled over a couple of hurdles in the centre, and jumped safely, though he had very little pace on. Afterwards he worked ovei a round on the No. 1 t grass, taking 2.1 3-5, the last mile being covered in 1.53. His conditiqp indicates that he has done a fair amount of work; and he should give a good account of himself in the Autumn Steeplechase on Tuesday. Scratchings. | Roxy was withdrawn from the Brighton Hurdles at 11.30 this morning, while Feldberg has been scratched for the Champagne Stakes.
