Stronger Rum Nation In Navy
(Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, March 26
As the outcome of a review of service conditions, the Admiralty has approved stronger rum for issue in the Navy, “as an experiment for one year.” “Two-water” rum will be substituted for “three-water.”
The practice of diluting rum by three parts of water to one of rum was introduced in the 18th century by Admiral Vernon in the West Indies as a measure of temperance reform. The proportions have since been unchanged. A request that white' sugar be supplied in addition to brown was rejected.
The suggestion that attendance at Divine service on Suridays be optional was also rejected.
