Need For Survey Of Fishing Boats

Copyright .] AUCKLAND, This Day. “The time has arrived when fishing boats should be under some sort of a survey or control," and I certainly think that stanchions, as recommended by the master of the Maud E and the Marine Department, should be installed.” The coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, made this comment this morning at the inquest into the death of George Wallace Barker, married, aged 45, engineer on the Maud E. The verdict was that the deceased lost his life through accidentally falling overboard from the launch. Deceased was missed on the afternoon of February 4. when the launch was proceeding to the Bay of Plenty. Evidence was given that the crew, to go forward, had to walk over coils of j rope. This, it was stated, constituted I danger and the suggestion was made j by the skipper and the Marine Department that movable stanchions be j erected along the side of the boat.
