1 The tennis tournament at unerani on Saturday, which was held to mark the occasion of the seventy-fifth birthday of the oldest member, Mr S. E. Baigent, resulted in the ladies' prize going to Miss D. Mason, while Mrs F. Drake, playing as a man, carried off the men's prize. • Mrs Robert Going was hostess at a bridge party in the evening, the guest of honour being Mr Baigent. A very exciting game resulted, prizes being won by Mrs K, McLean and Mr H. Stewart. The paragraph in Saturday's "Advocate," stating that the Harbour Board is to proceed immediately with the reerection of the jetty, is welcome to local residents. The jetty has been in a very dilapidated and dangerous condition for a long time, and since the storm of January last, several planks have been missing from the decking. Its present state is a very real danger, both to the children who play there and to the Portland workers, many of whom have to use this jetty in the dark. It is hoped that there will be no further delay in the erection of a new structure.
Personal.
Mr and Mrs F. Drake left the township last week to take up residence in Whangarei. As they have both spent the greater part of their early life in the district, and have always taken a keen interest in social functions and sports, they will be greatly missed by their many friends. They visited many places of interest as far south as Rotorua. Miss Elvin Weir returned home on Monday from a month’s holiday in Auckland. Miss Joan Spratt returned to Waiotira on Monday after a week-end visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Spratt. Mr and Mrs G. Johnson and daughters, Rene and Merlyn, arrived home on Sunday. During their thoroughly enjoyable fortnight’s tour, they visited many towns as far south as Palmerston, calling at Rotorua to visit Mr Noel Johnson, who is a railway employee there*; Mrs F. C. Frogley is -home again from a few days’ trip to Auckland, where she visited her father, Mr Martin. Mr Potter, a member of the staff of Speedway Steam Products, Ltd., Auckland, arrived on a business trip. During his stay in the district, he was the guest of Mr and Mrs W. W. McCardle.
