SCHOOL GAS EXPLOSION INQUIRY

(Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 21. At the inquiry at New London into the cause of the gas explosion at Overton High. School, in which 600 children and.teachers were killed, an official of the oil company said that a gaspipe serving the wrecked school had been connected to the company’s pipe without the company’s knowliedge or permission. The official said he first learned of the connection when he was asked to shut off the, gas after the explosion. He-examined the pipe, and found the connection in a shallow ditch,. which -appeared to have been dug less than three months previously. ! Mr Reardon, chairman of the school committee, said: “We are not stealing gas. It is absurd to say we connected with-the company’s pipe without permission. . We; dealt with the proper authorities, as we will bring out later.” • ’’ i , -
