KAMO ROAD CROSSING IS DEPARTMENTAL AFFAIR
When the road overbridge now being constructed at the Ruatangata level crossing is completed, the flash light warning signals at this crossing will no longer be required. The Railways Department wrote to the Whangarei Borough Council last night stating that it was prepared to j install the lights at the Kamo Road crossing, provided the council was willing to pay £6O towards the cost. Cr. R. S. Finch moved that the department be informed that the council did not consider the provision of lighting signals its responsibility. Cr. Brown seconded. Cr. A. T. Brainsby, while thinking perhaps that it had been unfortunate that the council had been asked to j contribute, said the council had a I definite responsibility to the people, of I the town. There had been many teri riblc disasters at this crossing, the I danger of which had been added’ to by j increased traffic, and it would be bet- ; ter to contribute something, rather I than let the chance slip. 1 The deputy-mayor: There is a good I deal in what Cr. Brainsby has said However, the Railways Department has sole control over this line of transport, and its duty is to give every possible safeguard to traffic. The installation of adequate warning signals at the crossing was long overdue, he said, and, irrespective of the removal of the Ruatangata plant, it was the duty of the Railways Department to put in wary devices at the crossing. The motion was carried.
