“It is iniquituous that General Sir Hubert Gough still has to bear the official blame for the retreat in March 1918,” stated Mr Lloyd George in a message to a re-union dinner today of the Old Comrades of the Fifth Army, which he could not attend owing to indisposition.
The message blamed Earl Haij: and tlie British General Headquarters for misplacing reserves and neglecting properly to fortify the Fifth Army front, in disregard of the general’s representation.. "■■■
Sir Hubert, who presided, paid a tribute to Mr. Lloyd George’s courage in removing the slur cast on the Fifth Army, which he attributed ‘to Mr., Lloyd George originally having been grossly misinformed. The German ambasador, -Herr von Ribbentrop, and Major Ostzen, who represented the German War,, Office, attended the function.
