N.Z. TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
PLAY RESUMED. [Per Press Association. — Copyright.'] TIMARU. This Day. Owing to heavy rain overnight, no play in the New Zealand lawn tennis championships was possible before noon. The courts had dried out surprisingly well when D. C. Coombe and N. P. Bedford commenced the men’s AllWellington singles final. Coombe started much more confidently, serving strongly. The games went with the service until Coombe broke through for a 4—2 lead. It was a battle of wits, and after taking three set points, Bedford drove out to give Coombe the first set 6 —3. Bedford was out in many drives, and Coombe ran to a 3 —l lead in the second set.
Coombe won the third set 6—4, as a result of a change of tactics. He took the net at evex’y opportunity, and put weak returns away for winners. Nevertheless, the tennis was not up to New Zealand final standard.
