HOKIANGA CALF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
On Wednesday, December 9, in the A. & P. grounds, Broadwood, the championship judging of the calf clubs of North Hokianga Group took place. Children receiving over 70 per cent, of marks were given a certificate of merit. All Broadwood entries received certificates. Dallas Cook received a silver cup for his champion dairy calf. Following are the results of the judging:— Calf-rearing, light breeds.—Pamela Curie (Waiotehue School), 119£ points 1, Thelma Kjoller (Broadwood School) 117, 2; Frank Walker (Taikawhana School), 116 i points 3. Heavy Breeds: Beryl Godfrey (Runaruna School), 106 points, 1; Ola Colebrook (Broadwood School), 103, 2; Norma Julian (Tutekehua School), 99, 3. Dairy-type calf. —Dallas Cook (Tutekehua School), 1; Frank Walker (Taikawhana School), 2; Beryl Godfrey (Runaruna School), 3; Thelma Kjoller (Broadwood School), h.c. Children’s judging: Mary Mulcahy (Tutekehua School), 1; Norma Julian (Tutekehua School), 2. Athletic Events. A championship race for girls and boys, under 15 years was held. Silver cups were donated from the Herbert Smith Trust Fund. The result of the boys’ championship was: —Rodney Holland (Broadwood School), 1; P. Dick (Rotokakahi School), 2; M. Beazley (Te Hua Hua School), 3. Girls: Daphne Hyde (Broadwood School), 1; Mary Mulcahy (Tutekehua School), 2; Margaret McGrath (Broadwood School), 3. JUDGING AT PUKEPOTO. The judging of the calves reared by the Pukepoto Native School Calf Club took place on Tuesday, Mr A. W. Masters being the judge. The following were the awards: — Light breeds; Peggy Morrison, 107 points, 1; Marae Robson, 85 points, 2: Rex Masters, 65, 3. Heavy breeds: Ray Spyve, 104 points, 1; Tira Job, 71, 2; Hedley Maurice, 70, 3. Junior class. —Alma Spyve, 75 points, 1; Nancy Morrison, 72, 2; June Spyve, 67. 3. MANGONUI RESULTS. The following are results of Mangonui County Calf Club competitions:— Paparore (Waipapakauri) Native. Calf-rearing:. Maori Marsden. 112 points. 1; Dave Rivers, 108. 2; Dick Hobson. 106, 3. Dairy-type: Mack Noble, 89 points, 1: Maori Marsden, 85, 2; Julia Brown, 82, 3. Kaingaroa. Rearing: Jim Stewart, 104 points, 1; Ray Wallace, 100, 2; Jim Maher, 95, 3. Dairy-type: Jim Stewart, 88 points, 1; Tom Wallace, 86 points, 2; Ray Wallace, 82 points. 3. Pamapuria. Rearing: Senior. Jack Semenoff, 115 points. 1; Rangi Kingi Dudley, 114, 2; Edith Semenoff, 110, 3. Junior: Adam .Latimer, 1; Patrick Semenoff, 2; Selwyn Clark. 3. 'Dairy-type: Patrick Semenoff 1, Adam Latimer 2. Edith Semenoff 3. Victoria Valley.
Rearing: Lynton Panther, 117 points, 1; Walter Thompson, 108, 2; Clive and Brian Beazley, 103 3. Dairy type: Walter Thompson 1, Lynton Panther 2, Clyde Beazley 3.
CALF CLUB PICNIC. A combined calf club picnic was held at Oruru on Friday, December 11. The Herbert Smith Cups were competed for by various schools, the points being as follows:—-Senior boys: Peria, 9 points; Parapara, 8 points; Mangonui, 5 points. Senior girls: Oruru, 20 points; Peria, 6 points; Mangonui, 5 points. Junior boys: Parapara, 20 points; Peria, 12 points; Mangonui, 11 points. Junior girls: Mangonui, Parapara and Peria, 14 points each. In the run off Peria was successful.
The calves paraded by the Oruru, Peria and Mangonui schools were judged as follows: —
Calf rearing competition (light breeds): Inez Rogers, 1181 points, 1 arid champion; Merle Taylor, 116£, 2; 'June Berghan, 115, 3; George Berghan, 113, 4; Desmond Dangen, 105, 5. Heavy breeds: Joan Garton 1, June Dangen 2. Dairy type: George Berghan. 81 points. 1; Jean Garton. 80 points, 2; Inez . Rogers. 74 points. 3. All classes were eligible for certificates of merit. The judges were Mr Thompson and Mr Roy Beazley, of Victoria Valley. The races held in the afternoon were as follows: Five years, boys: Jim (Parapara) 1, Ben Wright (Parapara) 2, Joe Grieve (Parapara) 3. Five years, girls: Ngaire Berghan (Mangonui) 1, Jean Serbin (Mangonui) 2, Ailsa Sherran (Parapara) 3. Seven years, boys: Doug. Christensen (Peria) 1, Ray McEvoy (Mangonui) 2. Dan Herevvini (Mangonui) 3. Seven year’s, girls: Margaret Anderson (Mangonui) 1. Kathleen Matthews (Mangonui) 2. Zita Lamblev (Oruru) 3.
Eight years, boys: Sid Olsen (Peria) 1, Edward Toby (Paranui) 2, Ralph Taylor (Oruru) 3.
