HUKERENUI SCHOOL SPORTS

Fine weather favoured the Hukere•nuf School sports meeting, held in Mr Keatley’s paddock on Thursday, and in spite of haymaking, the district turned out to see the children in the keenly-contested events for the school championship, for which a fine silver cup had been donated by the Herbert Smith trustees, v This was won by Edwin Rogers, with a splendid all-round performance, though Estelle Coutts also put up a fine record. Besides the official, sports programme there were also races for young and not-so-young, and games of rounders and cricket where even grandmothers took their runs manfully. Lunch and afternoon tea were served by the ladies in the shade of the trees by the river, and a most enjoyable day was completed by the presentation of book prizes to the children by the chairman® of the school committee, Mr A. Wiblin, who also congratulated air the senior pupils on gaining their proficiency certificates. : The following is the sports list: — Running.—Under 7; Leslie Rouse, Malcolm Ralls, Arthur Drower.
