MORE CARE FOR ABNORMAL CHILDREN PLEA
[Special to “Northern Advocate .”l AUCKLAND, This Day.
The need for Australian and New Zealand Governments to take greater care of abnormal children was stressed by Dr Lorria Hodgkinson, of Sydney, who is proceeding by the Aorangi to study American methods. “The tragedy is that there are thousands of such kiddies in mental hospitals, where they mix with those who are permanently insane. In America and England the proper care is taken of these children in special institutions for those mentally defective and abnormal.
“It should be the duty of the State to care for these young lives. It is a disgrace to the State to send feebleminded boys and girls to prison for offences. For them proper homes should be provided in Australia and New Zealand, and also agricultural stations and industrial colleges for proper treatment and. training, such as the children of well-to-do people are given.”
