MAUNGAKARAMEA
W.C.T.U. The annual meeting of the local branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Undenominational Church on December 1. Mrs Weir, vice-president, presided over the meeting in the absence of Mrs Cook, president. There was a fair attendance, but, owing to the unsettled weather, a number of members were unable to attend.
Officers elected for the ensuing year are as follows: —President, Mrs Weir; vice-presidents, Mrs Cook and Mrs Gillingham; secretary, Mrs Gillingham; treasurer, Mrs Harvey, senr.; cradle roll superintendent, Mrs Hannam, jun.; evangelistic superintendent, Mrs S.' Purdon; “White Ribbon” agent, Mrs Goodenough; notable days, Mrs S. W. Crawford; press reporter, Mrs T. E. Porter; librarian, Mrs Winnard; L.T.L. superintendent, Mrs Goodenough and Mrs H. Walker. *
A successful “bring arid buy” was held, the funds to go to the cradle roll picnic. Afternoon tea was served by the members.
Last Saturday evening, burglary was attempted at the local store, in the absence of the owner. A knife and an auger are reported missing from local residents. Personal. Mrs T. E. Churches is still ill with sciatica. Mr W. Courtney, junr., is home again, and is progressing satisfactorily. Mrs J. P. Crawford is on a visit to Auckland. Mrs G. Courtney, who has been staying with her mother, left recently for Ngatea, where she will meet her husband, who is returning from Australia. Mrs J. Wenzlick is still in charge of Mrs Courtney’s mother, who is an invalid. Mrs J. M. Purdon has been entertaining friends from Auckland.
Only two pupils sat for their proficiency examination, and both were successful.
