FLOOD REPORTS
POWERS OF LOCAL BODIES
Following a letter from the North Auckland Associated Chambers of Commerce to the Minister of Internal Affairs drawing his attention to the need for legislation empowering local bodies to allocate expenditure out of general funds for publicity purposes, the Minister has replied that careful consideration would be given to the representations made by the Chamber. At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber at Kaikohe on _ Thursday, Mr H. W. Crawford stated that the North Auckland Progress League, which operated some years ago, had actually had an Act put through enabling local bodies to use their funds for this purpose. An expenditure of £IOO was the amount allowed. A resolution moved by Mr H. Menzies and seconded by Mr H. F. Guy, that the Chamber go further into the subject was carried.
Delegates congratulated the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce on the manner in which the chamber had communicated. with the city P rg ss _5° n ' cerning flood reports in the North. Mr J. Thornton: “It is desirable to have press reports correct about floods. For instance if flooding occurred on the road at Kawakawa or Kaitaia this should not be put under the heading ‘floods in North Auckland’.” Mr H. F. Guy said that flooding in North Auckland, because of these headings, had become a by-word. A city land agent had informed him that there was a decided difficulty in quitting land in Northland at the present time because of this. “If you put the portions of Northland which are subject to floods together and compared it with the remainder it would not be more than a handful” he asserted. Mr H. W. Crawford said that he had also found, as Mr Guy had done, that Northland floods were a by-word in southern districts.
