EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY
A MATAKOHE PIONEER.
The eightieth birthday of one of the earliest residents was celebrated at Matakohe on Tuesday, when over 20 members of the family of Mrs and the late Mr C. Ball, gathered at the home of Mrs Ball to celebrate her birthday. Mrs Ball can lay claim to being one of the early pioneers of the Matakohe district, as she arrived there 56 years ago. Bor f n in England in 1856, she came to New Zealand with her parents at the age of seven, arriving in Auckland in 1863. Seventeen years later, Mrs Ball came to Matakohe, and was married a year later, in 1881. There were ten children of the marriage. Nine are still living, and one son was killed in the war. At present the descendants comprise 3 grandchildren and 10 great grand-children. Eight of Mrs Ball’s children attended the celebration, and the function was, from every point of view, a pronounced success. Mrs Ball, who enjoys the best of health, received telegrams and messages from her many friends scattered throughout New Zealand.
