AN AIRMAN’S DEATH

The fact that Mr W. M. O’Hara was in Whangarei a few weeks ago and that lie was a New Zealander whose mother resides at Warkworth. clothe with poignant interest to the people of this territory the news of his tragic fgte in Australia yesterday. Mi O’Hara, who became famous by reason of his sensational solo flight in a tight aeroplane across the Tasman, when he was known merely as “Mr X,” had spent some months in New Zealand, and was returning to his home in the East when death overtook him. He went *to Sydney by steamer, and, after the Federal authorities had decided not to prosecute him (as they had previously threatened) to his unauthorised flight to New Zealand, he set off on a leisurely jaunt to Java. That he was not concerned with records is shown by the fact that he had paid a social call to a friend’s sheep station, and was returning to Dubbo to get a hat when he crashed. It is very pathetic that a daring airman who, by his courage and skill in the air, had shed lustre on his native New Zealand, should have lost his life in the circumstances narrated.
