TOO MANY GUNS

RAMBLERS BEAT WHANGAREI i Ramblers were too good for Whangarei, which has not a very strong combination this year, and won by 4 goals to nil at Kensington Park. At the outset Whangarei held well but had to give way to superior combination and tactics. Both sides were having a fair share of the game at the start. Whangarei made one or two thrusts and then Bright took Ramblers /through and narrowly missed a neat shot. Presswood and Primmer exchanged long shots, and then Sloane had a shot which just missed Ramblers’ goal, bright again went through but Primmer came out and upset the shot. Ramblers scored first after twenty minutes’ play. They forced Whangarei back and Bright got control to send an oblique shot into the goal. Ramblers 1; Whangarei 0. Ramblers were pressing hard but Whangarei’s defence was standing up to the strain. Ramblers, however, carried too man/ guns and again had the whites in difficulties and clapped on two more goals in quick succession Bright collected both by good work.— Ramblers 3; Whangarei 0. Whangarei came close to scoring immediately after, when there was a scramble in the goal mouth. Theie I was no further score before half-time. 1 c Hewlett nearly scored for Wha- [ ngarei shortly after the resumption. He followed through, but his shot went astray. Ramblers were spending a good'deal of time in Whangarei’s half. Several times they nearly scored and Qj-py fceen defence on s pait stopped them. Munro had a shot, but Primmer cleared and Bright had several attempts. Primmer was doing | good work as goal-keeper. ! However, not long before the end. ! Bright again found a gap in the opposition. and made no mistake. Whangarei could not break the defence and had failed to score when 1 lime was called. Ramblers’ goal was seldom seriously threatened. Messrs Batchelor and Campbell refereed.

MATA RATHER UN, LUCKY WIN FOR TAURAROA Mata fielded a strong team and were rather unlucky in not sharing the points with Tauraroa. Persistently attacking, Mata were unable to 1 penetrate a solid defence, particularly during the second half. Tauraroa’s attacking tactics were more open than their opponents’, who adopted the short-passing method.

Mata were soon into the home team’s circle, and l a series of faulty clearances kept Tauraroa busy clearing penalty corners. Mata’s halfbacks were stopping well and -giving their forwards every chance to get going. E. Blake registered the first goal, finalising a hot attack. Owens and his backs had stopped several shots, but could not clear. Soon after, Tauraroa got going. A long drive upfield was stopped by Salmon/ whose clean hit back was intercepted by Sheen. The latter outpaced t the defence and scored easily, to make the half-time score one goal all. Upon the resumption, the play was hard and even for a while.. W. Johns was conspicuous by checking the Tauraroa inside movements and neat placing. The Tauraroa defence worked hard to prevent the Mata forwards getting into a shooting position. L. Price made a fine effort from a difficult angle, the ball just going over the crossbar. A little later Rule and Howie broke away on the left wing and forced play into Mata’s twentyfive. Two penalty corners proved fruitless. Mata again attacked and forced a penalty corner, which was spoiled by faulty stopping. The free hit carried play back to the Mata circle, where Howie gave Tauraroa the lead with a hot shot.

With a quarter of an hour to go, | Mata played hard to even the score, the full-backs sharing, at intervals, in the attack. Barber failed to find the goal when he attempted to deflect a shot four yards from the .goal line. Tauraroa were pressing at the close of play. A penalty corner was taken just on time: Tauraroa 2, Mata 1. Mr. A. J. Magee was referee.

FOUR-NIL At Springfield, Tauraroa beat Springfield by four goals to nil. W. Ormandy (2) and F. Thomas (2) scored. Messrs. Whittle and Miller refereed. LADIES' TRIALS The first match of the ladies’ trials was played at the school grounds between two teams selected by Mrs. Cadman and Mr. H. Patterson. Good direction was shown by the backs in their clearing hits, and also the passing by the forwards in both teams, but the game generally lacked sting. The attacking by the forwards, and the defence of the backs, was exceedingly sluggish, thus making the game a very slow one indeed.

The action of the players and the delivery of the ball will have to be speeded up a great deal if the team wishes to successfully defend the Provincial Cup at Country Week. With this object in view the selectors propose holding week-end practices for the purpose of coaching the players and attaining a higher standard of combination. Mr. S. Oldcorn refereed.
