A* MESSAGE from Rarotonga announces the death on Friday of Mr Charles Ward, an old identity of the Cook Islands, aged 80. He first visited the group in 1881, and took an active part in hoisting the Union Jack at Rarotonga in April, 1890, resulting in the Islands becoming a British Protectorate. He was born at Bolton, Lancashire, in 1856. He leaves one son. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was largely attended by Europeans, and natives.—P.A,
