ROSE DELAYED.— Flight-Lieuten-ent T. Rose, who is flying from Capetown to England, reached Cairo on Friday and left at dawn yesterday. He landed, at Tripoli to refuel, but the Italian authorities refused to allow him to continue as he lacked a permit. The airman thereupon cabled to London for a permit. Flight-Lieutenant Rose later »flew on to Cairns, in the South of France, where he will leave at 5.30 tomonow morning.

SYDNEY SUBURB FIRE.—The big retail store of Sweet Bros., Ltd., in Newtown suburb, was damaged by fire. Damage to stock is estimated at £50,000. Eighty firemen prevented the flames from spreading.

MAKURA IN ROUGH SEAS.—The Makura encountered terrific seas on the trip from Wellington to Sydney. One tremendous wave smashed a porthole and did other damage—Sydney.

DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS MARRIES. The film actor, Douglas Fairbanks, Senr., was married at the Town Hall, Paris, on Saturday, to Lady Ashley.

SINGAPORE BASE.—It is officially stated that the contractors have completed the main works at the Singapore base, which Admiralty engineers have taken over to carry out subsidiary works. The base now is authoritatively regarded as an effective unit of Imperial defence in the Pacific.

AIR ATTACKS ON BATTLESHIPS. The ndval correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph,” Mr Hector Bywater, says experiments have convinced the Admiralty that aircraft have not greatly endangered the modern battleship. Tests carried out involved explosion of numerous bombs above and below the water. They proved that even a heavy .bomb, highly charged with explosives damaged the superstructure surprisingly little, while “near hits” under water —which enthusiastic air partisans claimed would be fatal to even big ships—were also ineffective.
