Failed to Keep to Left. For failing to keep to the left of the centre line of the road at Mangapai, a motor-cyclist, James Clifton Palmer, was yesterday convicted and ordered to pay a fine of £ 1 and costs 19/. He came up before Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., in the Whangarei Police Court, Motorist "Who Speeaeo. For speeding on Kamo Road in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public safety, Lawrence Brown was fined £4 and 10/ costs at the Whangarei Police Court yesterday. Constable F. Davis said that the motor car was travelling along Kamo Road at a speed of 60 miles an hour. Accused, who did not ap pear, had denied all knowledge when interviewed. Waitangi Celebrations. As a gesture to show that the local authority in whose territory Waitangi lay, and as indicating aliveness to the importance of the occasion, the Whangarei Borough Council last night decided to inform the committee which is arranging for the Waitangi centenary celebrations in 1940, that it is prepared to assist in any way. This was done at the suggestion of Cr. A. T. Brainsby, who said that a broadcast appeal for assistance had been made by the committee, the secretary of which was Mr J. S. Brigham, town clerk of Auckland. Steps At Bluff. Whangarei has a local example of a climbing up the golden stairs. It is a flight of steps leading from the Parua Bay Road up the step cliff face to serve residences on “the Bluff.” In a letter to the Borough Council last night, Mr John Main pointed out that with age, wear and heavy rains, the steps were now dangerously in disrepair. He suggested their elimination and substitution by a graded path from Dundas Road, towards which he would be prepared to contribute. On the suggestion of the Mayor, the engineer was instructed to table a report.

Borough Picnic

The Borough Council last night made its usual contribution of £3 3/to the staff picnic committee.

Impounding Of Stock. To clear up a matter which had been raised when staff reorganisation was under discussion previously by the Whangarei Borough Council, the town clerk last night presented a report to the effect that it would be quite competent for the borough to authorise its surfacemen to impound cattle straying on the streets. The Mayor: “It is only necessary to name the men, and they will become rangers.” Cr G. H. Morrish opposed any move which would relax the supervision of streets, believing that the control of animals straying in the borough was one which could well be tightened up. Thfe engineer we\s asked to submit a report on impounding

Sale of Southdown Sheep. To-morrow, Wednesday, January 22, is the annual sale of Messrs. G. and R. Coates’ Southdown sheep. The sale takes place at the homestead. “Ruatuna,” Matakohe. The offering will consist of almut 250 one and two-shear rams and about 50 mixed age ewes. Mr Rodney Coates, who has had the handling of the stud for the past 20 years, assures us that this is the finest lot of sheep they have ever offered the public. In view of the fact that fat lamb year after year commands a good price, these sheep should meet good competition. 801
