CEREMONY AT SEA
ULM AND PARTY HONOURERD. AUSTRALIA’S GRATITUDE. (Received 10 a.m.) HONOLULU, December 28. A wreath of Australian flowers was dropped from the Matson liner Monterey at 11 a.m. today into the sea 300 miles eastward of Honolulu, in memory of Messrs Ulm, Littlejohn and Skilling, who were lost in the Star of Australia between Oakland. California, and Honolulu.
Captain Johanson said the wreath was made in Sydney and carried in the ship’s chilling room. For the ceremony the Monterey stopped while passengers and crew assembled for a short service. “Taps” was sounded as the wreath was lowered into the sea. Messrs David Yaffa and Kenneth G. Hall, of Sydney, friends of Mr Ulm, were to speak at the service.
On sailing from Honolulu Captain Johanson said; “Wo are paying homage to a man who furthered commercial aviation, with which modern steamship enterprises are in closest sympathy.
Messrs Yaffa and Hall said: “Australia was deeply moved by the fine search which was made by the American services and public. The great sympathy shown by America has brought the two nations closer together and Australia will never forget the humane gesture.” The motor schooner Lamakai, which which was chartered by Mrs Ulm to search for her husband and his companions, is calling at small islands westward of Honolulu, but so far no traces of the wrecked plane can be found.
