DUCHESS DIGS POTATOES.
The Duchess of York dug potatoes during a visit to Sheffield recently. The incident took place when she inspected some allotments, where 1200 men have turned waste land into kitchen and flower gardens. Each one of them had given a penny towards a stainless steel garden fork and a hand trowel for the Duke and Duchess, and when presenting them to the Duchess one of the men said, “We hoped the Duke would dig some potatoes with the fork.” “Well, I’ll try to take his place,” the Duchess smilingly replied.
Unmindful of her high heels and white kid gloves, the Duchess took the fork and dug a root of Duke of York potatoes. Picking one out of the earth with her gloved hand, she remarked, “They seem very good, in spite of the drought,”
The fork she used is to be sent to the Duke for his personal use.
